History and knowing our places in civilisation

The guy was a respectable academic, who credited his success to standing on the shoulders of giants, like Kepler.

It was a real fraternity thing, no wonder they called each other "Sir" and "Lord" and slapped each other with gloves when they had taken each other's wives and wanted to spill blood.

Stiff people and very interesting times were the times of Sir Isaac Newton, and he had the patronage of the king, as well.

Very civilised too.

This guy was, on the other hand, glad to be out of the home and his various wives, and he urged the American government of his time to develop the atom bomb before the Germans did...all in the interest of fair play, I suppose, all based on his THEORY, which he just fortuitously developed that one could make matter and energy change places.

He also, puzzlingly enough, wanted to get inside God's head, and decipher His secrets...

But everybody loved HIM, except of course, the survivors of the two bombs on some remote exotic land... after all, THEY are not really the same as real people, are they?

Of course, then there is THIS guy, who came to places where people were dark-skinned and had no clothes and  also found exotic creatures which led to the obvious conclusion; they were the fore-runners of modern human beings, MODERN being white, of course, and hence, now, the famous Origins of The Species.

There are, of course, other pictures about other disturbing things, where the CHURCH was the final authority on knowledge and superiority...or, in some cases, a king: Galileo, anyone? Or the other guy in the tub, "Archimedes". Now, what is the truth about

These things? REALLY?
